Description
Keep your food safe and wildlife at a distance with our Bear Bag system. Designed to help you hang your food away from curious brown, black, or grizzly bears, this kit includes a sturdy rope, a durable carabiner, and a throw bag for easy setup. An essential tool for backcountry camping and responsible wildlife practices.
How to Use the Bear Bag System
-
Prepare the Throw Bag
Place a rock inside the small throw bag and securely tie the rope to it using a simple knot.
-
Find the Right Tree
Choose a solid tree and branch at least 100 metres (330 ft) away from your campsite. The branch should be at least 5 metres (16 ft) off the ground and extend 2 metres (6.5 ft) from the trunk.
-
Get the Rope Over the Branch
Toss the throw bag over the branch and pull the rope through so you have both ends on the ground.
-
Attach the Bear Bag
Tie the carabiner securely to one end of the rope, then clip it through the loop on your bear bag.
-
Set Up the Pulley System
Thread the second end of the rope through the carabiner.
-
Hoist the Bear Bag
Pull on the rope to lift the bag high into the air.
-
Secure the Bag
Tie a 20 cm (7.5 in) stick horizontally onto the rope about 2 metres (6.5 ft) from the ground—or as high as you can reach. Slowly let the rope down until the stick catches in the carabiner. Your bear bag is now suspended and secure.
-
To Lower the Bag
Pull on the rope, remove the stick, and gently lower the bag.
Tip: With a little practice, you'll be able to hang your food in 1–2 minutes. The trickiest part? Tossing the rock over the branch!
